Candarian Demon Productions certainly know how to sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to picking bands. Here we have another fine release from this label in the form of Lithuanian black metallers Blackthru. Blackthru (or as they are now known Triangle of Art – the band decided on the name change shortly after this album was released), play an atmospheric brand of black metal, not too far removed from early Gehenna, albeit with slightly rougher, Slavonic edge to its sound (with a few touches of Drudkh thrown in).

Beginning with sounds of the forest topped by a wistful acoustic guitar line, it's not long before the melancholic guitarwork weaves it magic over gurgling, raspy vocals, whilst the soothing synthesizers embrace the sound tightly, giving a floaty, ethereal tone to the proceedings. The drums merely do their job and, although programmed, they sound quite earthy and realistic compared to some I've heard, adding a strong backbone to the riffs without being overtly outlandish. There isn't a huge amount of dynamics when it comes to tempo, but this is a good thing, simply due to the fact the album is pretty much mid-paced throughout, it adds to the atmosphere with early Emperor-like keyboards over openly strummed harshly distorted treble-soaked guitars.

This is only the 2nd Lithuanian band I've ever heard (the other being the excellent Poccolus), but it certainly seems these Lithuanians know their stuff better than a lot of Scandinavians when it comes to black metal. After hearing this album, and witnessing the impressive atmosphere it invokes, I'll definitely be interested to see what path will be followed next, and if the change of band name brings with it a change of musical style. Another seditious release to keep the flame of the underground burning strong – so that's a thumbs up from me.

Around his early year as DJ/Producer SAMUEL KINDERMANN hooked up with local DJ BASTIAN EL ZOHBI (aka CRANQUE) and his partner PELLE BUYS, forming EINMUSIK. Not only were the guys good mates, but they also formed a tight production team powered by Samuel´s production know how and the combiend DJ experience and network of Basti and Pelle in the local scene. The project served as the perfect exchange of talents. After one and a half years of intensive studio work, the team found a platform for their music in ITALIC, a very well established Cologne based label that exels in quality Electronic Music. This was a massive opportunity and the boys could not wished for a better introduction into the industry and chance to get their music out through the right channels.
They didn't have to wait long to get noticed in a big way. In the summer of 2003, their 12" Debut WEEKENDER (ITALIC 033) was picked up by MINISTRY OF SOUNDS's "Neue Heimat" compilation series. Well known for their work ethic, the boys hit the studio again and released follow up tracks on labels such as WHIZKIDS and LIEBE/DETAIL, quickly forming a reputation as one of the top acts favoured by a lot of well repected DJs and producers around the world.
It was however their next famed release JITTERY HERITAGE (ITALIC 044) in 2004 that caught the attention of the international scene by surprise and went truly global. In the summer of 2004 and Winter 2005 you simply could not out without this track... it was everywhere. Remix duties where quick to follow, including work for ROCCO BRANCO aka DOMINIK EULBERG, COBURN and EGOEXPRESS and productions for JAKE. The EINMUSIK live debut followed shortly after with a massive set at the MAYDAY festival in 2006.
Late in 2005 SAMUEL KINDERMANN began focusing on other projects, developing his work as a songwriter and producer for other artists. Project such as the German SENSATION WHITE anthem in 2005 where soon to follow. In 2006 SAMUEL KINDERMANN also produced the KAROTTE remix of the MOGUI "Sensation White" anthem that spend no less than 10 weeks at No. 1 on the DDC (German Dance Charts), a rather fat achievement. Following the successes of the previous years, CRANQUE and PELLE BUYS also started to focus on their own projects and the three went seperate ways. PELLE BUYS went solo under his own name and also under the project name of ERROR ERROR together with DENIS KARIMANI (aka REMUTE). For CRANQUE the time had come at the end of 2006 to start his own label project called MODUS OPERANDI. After casually pumping out another two number one remixes for SOFFY O and IAN O'BRIEN DOCKER in 2006, three MODUS OPERANDI releases and the superb HALF MOON TIGER ep (ITALIC 066) early in 2007, the work on the debut album started finally.

This is probably my favorite out of the four re-issues. This album was probably the first Monkee album that you could play all the way through and apart from "Headquarters" it also has a consistency that was missing from the debut and "More Of the Monkees". Being that this was the first Monkee album to be cut on an 8-track machine the re-mastering job is top notch and the sound is much fuller than the previous releases. It was also nice of Rhino for including both the stereo and mono versions of the album. The extras contain tracks from the box set and the "Missing Links" collections as well as previous un-issued recordings. Just a reminder that the re-issues come in a didgipak case just the like the Bee Gees re-issues.

Revolutions can be caused by funny things such as not allowing a TV rock group to perform on their own album of songs. One of The Monkees finest albums gets a deluxe reissue. Some audiophiles will quibble with the mastering choices that Bill Inglot made for this set but the music itself is terrific. We get both the stereo and mono mixes for the first time on CD as well as some new remixes (some of the bonus material was never mixed for stereo). I'm happy to see the single version of "The Girl I Knew Somewhere" a terrific Nesmith song that was on the b-side of "A Little Bit of Me, A Little Bit of You" (a Neil Diamond song that's a very good song but can't compare to Nesmith's tune).

Witnessing an attempt at genre crossover is kind of like watching a logrolling competition. The failures are almost as excruciatingly embarrassing for the audience as they are for the performer. But when one gets a glimpse at one of the rare success stories: Ah! What a thing of beauty! Genesis's 1983 eponymous release sits proudly in the latter camp. Laying down nine midtempo tracks that are full and crisp without wearing too glossy of a pop sheen, Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford create an aural world where Yes fans and those who like chart-toppers live in harmony. And whatever lyrical well Collins chooses to tap proves to be a gusher, whether he is dipping into reservoirs of Gabrielan menace ("Mama," "Home by the Sea," "Silver Rainbow"), stealing a page from pop music's huge tome of conflicted-heart numbers ("That's All," "Taking It All To Hard"), or getting just plain ol' ridiculous ("Illegal Alien"). At the risk of seriously ruffling indie-rock feathers, one might even say that, in a way, Genesis sits as the great-grandfather of Radiohead's OK Computer. The idea that your body can rock while your brain gets tickled ain't a new one; it's just that people don't put it into practice that often.

Angie Stone has soul to burn, as hordes of breathless fans who stand by the excellence of 2004's Stone Love know, and despite a change in record labels and hairdos, her mighty reserves haven't dwindled--The Art of Love and War, on the re-launched Stax label, is as full-bodied an affair as this old-school-leaning, incessantly self-exploring diva has delivered. The comparisons to Jill Scott should dead-end here: Songs like "Baby," with the gospel great Betty Wright, and "Sometimes," with backing singers who strut right through the beat and into the part of the brain that makes swaying happen, are all Angie. Which is to say their edges are never going to need sharpening, but they're also porous enough to let in softness and a sense of hard-won maturity. A couple of late-disc numbers pull off the excellent feat of also letting the funk in--"Play Wit It" captures a Lauryn Hill kind of cool, groovy but substantial, and "Pop Pop" goes for (and achieves) full-on fizziness with an undercurrent of sophistication.

Flatland - Vermuyden (2007)

"Released in 2006, Flatlands Vermuyden could easily fit within the sonic margins situated by genre stalwarts ISIS or Neurosis. At the same time, this bass-heavy meandering 6-track EP takes on a definitely rawer edge in execution and production than its predecessors. Overall, this fledgling UK band does well to attract diverse audiences supplementary to the average post-rock/doom-sludge crowd that seems all too frequent today. If given the proper prologue, it would not be stretching to foreshadow great things in this band s future. The first minute and a half provides the gloomy backdrop to which Flatlands so proficiently sets forth across the rest of Vermuyden. The band does an excellent job meshing rich, heavy bass with layered guitars and an obscure drumming array to create a constantly progressing animal. Indeed, the band has done their homework as the songs on Vermuyden ebb and flow as if alive--surging instances of sonic mass intertwine with moments of atmospheric subtlety to create their own unique sound. Each song slowly evolves to include both the harsh and the melodic to create a combination like few other bands. Overall, it s apparent that the band strives to break away from the tired heavy segment followed by a melodic segment formula, but instead do a stand-up job of blending both elements competently while slowly building momentum throughout the span of the (respective) song. The vocals are consistently abrasive (maybe too harsh in places), but are heard in relatively small doses. The drumming is not entirely pronounced, but has a cadence style theme in multiple places that fits well. In time, Flatlands could easily develop into a band with a style that stands out from the weary masses striving to do something different."

Uncolored Wishes - World Under Control (2007)

Uncolored Wishes has created something new, well not really because the band just uses a lot of different influences but the final result is surprising and new. Just imagine a mix of Jazz, Alternative music and Avangardist sounds with Progressive Metal, Power, Atmospheric music and finally Heavy Metal… Yeah I know, some of you probably believe that it cannot work and that it's probably a bit messy and I will tell to them that they're maybe not so wrong, though Uncolored Wishes is a good band and even if there are some mistakes in this album, all in all it's a good release really. "World Under Control" is an album of Power Metal first but not of cheesy Euro Power Metal, no because of course there are all those little touches of different music there and there and it's just different. As an example a song like "Amazone" begins with a classic Power Metal melody with fast double bass rhythm but you have also Keyboards which really sound electronic plus some really interesting breaks and Progressive complex lines with finally the voice of Marc Tari which clearly sounds "Heavy Metal". All the album is a bit like this song, it's always different, never linear and if some songs will be soft with some classic keyboards, some other will be a bit more "modern" and futurist with electronic sounds (and as always, this nice Heavy Metal voice). It's really good and original, well done and well interpreted for a first album, the goal is scored!

On paper, Chrome Hoof could be a pop music lover's worst nightmare, so, as a pop music lover, perhaps it's fortunate that I first saw them, not on paper, but onstage at a festival in a Wild West theme park. Despite their spectacular performance, for a whole year I was convinced that they weren't quite as musically accomplished as I was an absolute drunk. Next summer, though I was even drunker, the Hoof were even better: ripping it up with gay chain mail, funk, trumpets and a goat. Yes, it was easy to harp on about Circulus, being as decent folk music was (and yet remains) criminally underrepresented in the London elite (which has recently morphed into a free newspaper - you've seen that right?), but of all the small festival successes of the past five years, only Chrome Hoof took this bloody long to be wrapped in plastic and served up cold and dead for my aural pleasure.

" Legacy Of Hatred " is the second album of the Picardy group Ashura. I do not know the first album of the group but this one is rather well done... musicalement !!! I am not fan of this kind of song but it should be said that this one is energetic and effective !!! The made group of the death metal mixed of elements thrash and hardcore. Musicalement the compositions are well structured, alternating brutal and extreme passages with melody and more delicate passages. In the same way certain passages are heavy and powerful whereas others are rather delicate and rather ends as in " Funeral Of The Desert " piece instrumental of any beauty, very in contrast with the sixth piece " Might Is Right " very brutal, violent and fast, the vocal duet of this song rather is successful. The music is powerful, heavy and direct. With final the group gives us an extreme album of good invoice, conceived well, direct, effective and energetic... to see on scene, because it is there that the pieces take their dimension... energetic pieces for an energetic group !!! Elvaron - Gravitation Control System (2007)

It’s been more than two years since I discovered French prog metal band Elvaron who pleasantly surprised me with their fourth album The Buried Crown, but I wasn’t prepared for the killer CD that Gravitation Control System became. You get less but longer songs, and a concept that sounds very science fiction (unfortunately my promo didn’t come with a lyrics sheet), all this from a band that has considerably matured in the last twenty-something months. The axis of the band is comprised of guitarist Matt and keyboarder Lindsay who complement each other perfectly, which can best be witnessed on the captivating duet they deliver at the end of Living In The Anthill. Instead of only combining prog metal of the Dream Theater school with Eighties thrash, as they did in the past, there are this time also many classical or rather early 20th century post-romantic influences, which make for a really classy atmosphere throughout the album. The vocals are most of the time rougher than we are normally used from prog bands, reminding of American power metal bands like early Metal Church. Lindsay’s switching between moody keyboard sounds and piano parts make for nice variety, never watering down the sound but instead adding a dimension that makes Gravitation Control System one of the more original releases of its genre. Their label calls Elvaron the French Dream Theater, which I find a bit unfair, as the French sound earthier than their American inspiration, and it’s obvious that Elvaron are really working hard and successfully on getting their own sound. Considering that nowadays every slightly more skilled melodic metal band calls itself a progressive power metal band, Elvaron truly stand out as a revelation, firmly grounded in the thrash genre, but never closing their eyes to the more refined styles like prog, jazz and classical music. Black Signs - Fuoriuso (2007)

Please, usually I am not picky at all, but this is simply too mediocre and pointless even for me! Fuoriuso from Italy brings nothing special, new or exciting with 'Black Signs' - this is plain and simple hard rock with a nice aggressive attitude. The guitar sound is raw and in-your-face, but the riffs have been heard a million times before, the drumming is dull and uninspired, the vocalist has some attitude and a nice raw voice and the lyrics are just one cliché after another, and if you put all of the ingredients together this offers almost next to nothing... Clearly inspired by some of the genre giants from the 80's like Mötley Crüe, L.A. Guns and Love/Hate, without ever reaching the same level as any of those bands. But if you like your hard rock with an rough edge then this might be something for you...

Armed with a deep fount of Catholic lyrical references and a falsetto that could charm the chastity belt off of a 19th-century Puritan, Cass McCombs sculpts a cozy little niche among the fickle crevasses of contemporary Americana. Though the ceaseless pounding of opener "Lionkiller" suggests a plate of bona fide rockers to follow, softer, more cascading helpings of McCombs' songwriting repertoire prevail, refining the signature melodies developed on previous CDs PREfection and A. The result is a fine, sonic demi-glace, best encapsulated by lead single "That's That." By the time the song closes in blossoming layers of vocal and guitar harmonies, the song has focused everything McCombs does best: flaunting his knack for pictorial storytelling, lush vocal timbres, and the compelling gravity of a good mid-tempo groove. The second half of the album resides largely in a fantasy realm of drowsy elegance. Sounding like a perfectionist Donovan lost in A Midsummer Night's Dream, McCombs' campfire balladry ("Full Moon or Infinity"), percussive breathing ("Deseret"), and love of cavernous reverb ("Windfall") culminate in an almost overwrought beauty that defies listeners not to lose their bearings in its relentless caress.

Unlike your average band, Scottish five-piece 'Drive-By Argument' does not consist of old childhood friends. In fact, their names were drawn out of a hat during their first months at university, with the object to put together project
bands for their music course. Drive-By Argument did not know each other when they met up for their first rehearsal in October 2004. At this point the only thing they had in common was the fact that they all thought their fellow band members looked like idiots. However, as soon as they started playing together, something clicked and the band realised Drive-By Argument was to become much more than just a project.
